We’re excited to welcome Gina Bocra to the program–she’s the first-ever Chief Sustainability Officer at NYC’s Department of Buildings. Bocra and Mandyck will discuss New York City’s plan to cut carbon in buildings and the new Energy Conservation Code on the same day it goes into effect. They’ll also discuss next steps in the implementation of LL97, the city’s climate emissions reduction law for buildings.

Chief Sustainability Officer, NYC Department of Buildings

Gina Bocra is Chief Sustainability Officer at the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB). With 19 years of sustainability experience, Gina leads a DOB team of specialists charged with enforcing the Energy Code and chairs the new Local Law 97 advisory board. She supports the implementation of laws addressing building emissions, benchmarking, audits and retro-commissioning, and lighting and sub-metering, while also contributing to new legislation to increase energy efficiency in New York City’s building stock. She assists with the continued development of the New York City Construction Codes and the NYC Energy Code to accommodate advances in sustainability.

John Mandyck joined Urban Green Council in 2018 as its first-ever CEO. He capped a 25-year career as Chief Sustainability Officer for United Technologies Corporation, a Fortune 45 global leader in the building, aerospace and food refrigeration industries. He also serves as a Visiting Scientist at the Harvard University T.H. Chan School of Public Health and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Connecticut School of Business. John is the founding chair of the Corporate Advisory Board for the World Green Building Council, a former board chair of Urban Green, and co-author of the book Food Foolish.

Chan School of Public Health, director of Harvard’s Healthy Buildings program at and a co-author of “Healthy Buildings: How Indoor Spaces Drive Performance and Productivity.” In recent weeks, Dr. Allen’s views of COVID 19 have been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, CNBC and more. He’ll share his expertise at the intersection of buildings and health and answer audience questions in this critical period for public health.

Dr. Joseph Allen
Assistant Professor, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health

Dr. Joseph G. Allen is an assistant professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and co-author of Healthy Buildings: How Indoor Spaces Drive Performance and Productivity, with John Macomber at Harvard Business School. He began his career conducting forensic health investigations of sick buildings. At Harvard, Dr. Allen directs the Healthy Buildings program where he created ‘The 9 Foundations of a Healthy Building’. He works with Fortune 500 companies on implementing Healthy Building strategies in their global portfolios and presents internationally on the topic of Healthy Buildings. His work has been featured widely in the popular press, including the Wall Street Journal, National Geographic, Financial Times, USA Today, NPR, The Washington Post, Fortune, New York Times, and Harvard Business Review, Dr. Allen is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology and the journal Indoor Air.
