Development Manager

The mission of Urban Green Council is to decarbonize buildings for healthy and resilient communities. We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Development Manager to manage key fundraising activities. The manager will be responsible for helping develop and execute an annual fundraising plan, and managing corporate memberships, foundation and government grants, our annual gala, individual gifts, and special campaigns.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Communications and Development, the Development Manager will be responsible for executing Urban Green’s fundraising priorities and managing the Development Coordinator.

This will be a largely remote position, but will be required to be onsite for special events and meetings in the New York City area. All Urban Green staff are required to be fully vaccinated and boosted against Covid-19. 

A person who will succeed in this role:

  • Excels at thinking creatively on how to reach and engage our diverse supporter base including corporations, foundations and individual members.
  • Has strong written and interpersonal communication skills and enjoys interacting with external stakeholders and developing fundraising proposals of $100k or more.
  • Is detail-oriented and has the ability to accurately track supporter communications, revenue, and next steps for engagement.
  • Effectively collaborates and coordinates with program staff on fundraising projects, especially foundation and government grants.

A few other qualities we are looking for include:

  • Thorough understanding of and enthusiasm for Urban Green’s mission and priorities, and the ability to convey this knowledge in a compelling way in written and verbal communication with partners, donors, and members.
  • At least seven years of fundraising experience.
  • Prior experience cultivating, recruiting, and managing corporate donors, ideally in the NYC real estate, design and construction sectors. 
  • Experience in the environmental nonprofit sector, especially foundation and government funding. 
  • Experience working with Salesforce or a similar CRM database.

Key Responsibilities

  • In coordination with the CEO and Sr. Director of Development and Communications, develops and executes a fundraising plan with clear financial goals and milestones.
  • In coordination with the Sr. Director of Development and Communications cultivates and maintains positive relationships with current and potential organizational and individual donors and foundations.
  • Oversees organizational and individual membership programs and cultivation including prospect research, proposal customization and presentation, and follow-ups. 
  • Supervises Development Coordinator, who manages day-to-day organizational membership and fundraising events including quarterly Member Receptions, special donor events and the annual Gala.
  • Collaborates with the education team to grow earned revenue and provide streamlined communication to partners.
  • Works with operations team to provide monthly and annual fundraising reporting, reconciliation, cash flow, and income projections.
  • Manages foundation and government grant application research and submission.
  • Develops communication materials supporting fundraising activities.

Benefits and Compensation

The salary range for this position is $75,000 to $80,000. Offers will be made commensurate to experience. Benefits include:

Operations Manager

Urban Green Council is looking for a professional, detail-oriented Operations Manager to oversee the Finance, HR, IT and Administrative activities of its 15-person organization that works to decarbonize buildings for healthy and resilient communities.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Operations & Strategy, the Operations Manager will play a critical role in the internal operations of the organization. The Operations Manager will direct and improve administrative and business processes to fully support programmatic and staff growth. They will also partner with the senior leadership on organization-wide initiatives, including our DEI Action Plan, and will supervise an Operations Associate. 

This will be a largely remote position, but will require regular visits to the Urban Green office in Manhattan for select tasks and meetings. All Urban Green staff are required to be fully vaccinated and boosted against Covid-19. 

The person who will best succeed in this role:

  • Is a systems thinker who has a passion for creating and maintaining efficient processes and wants to make an impact on the internal operations of an organization. 
  • Is a people person with excellent interpersonal skills who loves collaborating with others and is passionate about nonprofit operations.
  • Is a problem solver with strong critical-thinking skills who enjoys finding solutions as challenges arise. 
  • Has experience managing nonprofit budgeting and finance processes, preferably at a similarly-sized organization (Annual budget is $2.7k).
  • Has supervisory experience and is invested in supporting the growth of entry-level staff. 
  • Loves managing details and can keep track of projects across different functional areas. 

A few other qualities we are looking for include:

  • Experience managing recruitment and hiring processes, including internships, and dedication to nurturing positive organizational culture. 
  • Experience planning and facilitating meetings, both at the departmental and organizational level. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to convey complex processes in a clear and concise manner. 
  • Tech-savvy. Experience with Salesforce and Quickbooks strongly preferred. Proficient in Microsoft Office,Google Apps, and Mac products with a proven track record of quickly learning new platforms and applications. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Management

  • Serve as main liaison  with Urban Green’s accounting firm to ensure that financial processes occur in a timely and appropriate fashion, and monthly reports are delivered accurately and on time.
  • Working with department leads, update and monitor cash flow and budget projections and report out to the leadership team on a monthly basis 
  • Manage bi-weekly payroll and bill pay processing, and supervise part-time bookkeeper.
  • Manage the annual audit process in conjunction with external auditors.
  • Manage annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with Urban Green’s leadership team.

Human Resources

  • Oversee all HR functions including staff and intern recruitment, onboarding, retention, and separation. 
  • Direct and manage employee performance management and professional development.
  • Administer benefits in conjunction with our Professional Employer Organization (PEO).
  • Serve as key contact to PEO and regularly evaluate their effectiveness.
  • Ensure that Urban Green HR policies, including the employee manual, are reviewed regularly for compliance and integration of best practices. 

Information Technology

  • Manage IT planning for Urban Green by liaising with external IT consultants regarding cybersecurity measures and technology upgrades.
  • Work with the Operations Associate to ensure staff are receiving basic IT and troubleshooting assistance as needed.
  • Support the Operations Associate in the maintenance of office equipment (copier, printer, video conferencing tools, etc.)

Administration

  • Oversee management of Urban Green’s physical office, and serve as senior contact to building management staff. 
  • Lead the planning and execution of staff-wide meetings, including monthly staff meetings and org-wide retreats.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Director, manage staff engagement efforts including Culture Committee meetings, Professional Development Committee meetings, and related activities to support a positive organizational culture and climate.
  • Manage the implementation of Urban Green’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion action plan and serve as main point of contact with external DEI consultants.

Benefits and Compensation

Programs Coordinator

Urban Green Council’s educational programs are the go-to resource for the region’s sustainability community: architects, engineers, contractors, tradespeople, policymakers, nonprofit leaders, energy consultants, and building owners and operators. Over 1,500 people attend our annual educational events on climate policy, green technologies, advancements in building practices, and changes to codes. 

The Programs Coordinator will manage the creation and execution of live and recorded educational events and support the development of on-demand courses for building professionals.

The person who will best succeed in this role:

  • Feels a sense of ownership to get things done; a partner on the team who sees it as their responsibility to manage and deliver events on time. 
  • Is a process thinker with great organizational skills and an eye toward continuous improvement; this person enjoys handling details and can methodically create, manage and implement multiple projects running in parallel, while improving internal processes such as simplifying event registration, or rethinking how we recruit volunteers.
  • Possesses excellent project management, leadership and collaboration skills; this person Is a problem-solver who thrives in small companies and solves problems creatively. They anticipate roadblocks and potential problems and develop a plan to address them.
  • Authentic enthusiasm about sustainability; their interest in green building is genuine, and they value building long-term industry relationships and connecting with members of our audience to better understand the types of programming we should develop.
  • Expert communication skills. The Programs Coordinator should have excellent interpersonal skills, including writing and public speaking. They can communicate with a wide group of stakeholders and know when and what to communicate.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Programs Coordinator will evolve over time, but current key duties include:

  • Coordinate Live Educational Events 
    • Develop and coordinate 10 to 15 live and livestreamed seminars and tours per year—including our annual conference—and ensure events run smoothly. 
    • Work with the Senior Director of Education to develop innovative program content that integrates with the organization’s goals and objectives.
    • Represent Urban Green at events by welcoming speakers and guests, making public announcements, and introducing speakers.
    • Implement all event logistics including coordinating registration and check-in, computer and AV requirements, and refreshments. 
    • Manage relationships with hosts, and external producers for large-scale events. 
    • For online events, ensure technology is working and presenters are prepared. 
    • Serve as the main point of contact for event-related inquiries for attendees, speakers, staff, and volunteers.
    • Collect and analyze post-event evaluations and statistics, including attendee surveys, to guide future programming.
  • Outreach and Promotion
    • Work with the Communications team to promote events widely using existing and new outreach channels.
    • Develop and maintain relationships with partner organizations to expand our audience by cross-promoting events.
  • Create and Deliver Video Content
    • Produce and manage Urban Green Live and a new podcast featuring short case studies of green building strategies, techniques and technologies. 
    • Manage all logistical aspects of online programming, including coordinating speakers and recording sessions. 
    • Secure continuing education credits for live events. 
    • Manage recordings of live events
    • Support video production and editing for on-demand courses. 
  • Volunteer Outreach and Management
    • Coordinate Monthly Programs Committee that advises on event content
    • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate quarterly committee meetings.
    • Recruit, select, and onboard a diverse group of committee members annually. 
    • Manage communication with the Committee. Capture meeting minutes, manage document sharing with members, and confirm next steps are completed.

Instructor: GPRO Construction Management

The shift to low-carbon, energy-efficient construction is gaining momentum. These projects require an understanding of new technologies in building systems, and extra coordination across disciplines. GPRO Construction Management teaches construction professionals the specific and actionable strategies needed to integrate sustainability practices into their everyday work. This course is designed to show practitioners what they need to know at every phase of construction, and how to avoid common mistakes.

Urban Green Council is looking for GPRO Construction Management Instructors who are passionate about reducing energy use in the building industry. Using Urban Green’s proven curriculum and training materials, GPRO instructors help construction staff think differently about their day-to-day work, with the goal of making buildings healthier and more sustainable. These are part-time contractor positions paid on an hourly basis.

ABOUT THE COURSE

This course is designed for busy construction professionals. Participants take a one-day classroom training (in person or virtually) and then finish the course by selecting three hours of elective content that is most relevant to their work. Participants will leave this course with practical steps to achieve successful, sustainable, and cost-effective projects.

INSTRUCTOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create an engaging and dynamic classroom experience
  • Teach material from approved curriculum, including course PowerPoint slides and customized classroom exercises
  • Prepare for, and deliver, GPRO CM training in line with established training standards while being mindful of different learning styles, making adjustments when needed
  • Motivate students to actively participate in all aspects of the educational process and answer questions throughout the course
  • Debrief with Urban Green staff regularly to provide feedback on training sessions
  • Participate in instructor recertification webinars, surveys and calls to stay up-to-date with curriculum
  • Stay up-to-date with current practices and continually improve knowledge and understanding of the field
  • Prepare and submit required documentation following courses, including, but not limited to, sign-in sheets and student evaluations

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 7-8 years minimum professional and practical experience working in building construction and or equivalent. Relevant jobs include: construction managers, general contractors, experienced tradesperson, project managers and site superintendents
  • A passion for sustainability, knowledge of high-performance building practices, and willingness to learn more about the latest sustainability trends
  • Enthusiasm for teaching and a sensitivity to student needs and interests
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Proactive, diligent, flexible, enthusiastic and creative
  • Detail-oriented and able to work independently
  • Able to teach using ample real-world experience
  • Available to attend required training sessions held by Urban Green
  • Availability to teach classes during the workweek, as needed
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google products and video conferencing platforms (PowerPoint, Word, and Excel; Google Slides; Zoom Meeting or GoToTraining)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience as a trainer or in presenting technical information in a group setting
  • Experience teaching adults
