Climate Week 2024

Celebrate Climate Week in NYC with this guide to upcoming events on environmental advocacy and impact.

Climate Week in NYC is the largest climate advocacy event of the year, with organizations in business, tech, politics, academia, and society hosting programs for people to learn more about the current impacts of climate change and take action. With over 600 events across New York City, communities drive home the sentiment of this year’s message: It’s Time. To join in on the action, here is a line-up of events open to the public:

September 22

The Opening Ceremony • 1pm – 6pm • Online

Kick off the start of Climate Week by tuning into the Climate Group’s Opening Ceremony, an event well-attended by world-leading politicians, business executives, and civil society representatives. Come hear about their global outlook on the environment and strategies for climate action.

Herbalism for All: Foundational Tools for Climate Resilience • 6pm – 8pm • In person

Join Seeding Sovereignty for a calming evening of education and community using herbalism as a grounding and healing tool in the climate movement. Learn about the history of herbalism in communities and create your own herbal blend to carry you through the week.

Seed Collecting with The Bee Conservancy @ Governors Island • 2pm – 3:30pm • In person

Help save the bees by collecting seeds to plant in the spring! Collect seeds with the guidance of The Bee Conservancy and learn about how the changing climate is impacting the bee and plant species on Governor’s Island and beyond.

September 23

UPROSE Screening: Emergent City • 7pm – 9pm • In person

How can we protect working-class communities in the wake of climate catastrophe? Attend the UPROSE community screening of Emergent City, a film that explores over a decade of change in a working-class neighborhood facing gentrification, development, and the need for jobs that will allow people to stay in the place they call home. Viewers are invited to consider how change might emerge from dialogue and collective action in a world where too many outcomes are constrained by money, politics, and business as usual.

September 24

#ProtectWhatWeLove: Artifacts from floods & fires in Canada • 10am – 7pm • In person

If your home was about to be destroyed by a flood or wildfire, what object would you save? Sierra Club Canada invites you to visit a powerful exhibit that features artifacts damaged or rescued from recent extreme weather events in Canada, including the 2023 wildfires that filled skies from Canada to New York with smoke. Learn about the impact of climate change by viewing artifacts. Climate survivors will be on-site to share their stories of loss and resilience.

Rethinking Water • 8:00am – 7:30pm • In Person and Online

Hosted by Sciens Water in collaboration with Columbia University’s Water Center, the 5th annual Rethinking Water Conference brings together finance, academia, government, and industry leaders to find solutions to the most pressing water challenges in America. Come explore how funding can be best utilized to achieve sustainable solutions to the water crisis.

September 25

Greening New York’s Grid by 2030 • 10am – 12:30pm • In Person

There are six years left to meet the goals outlined in New York State’s Climate Act mandate! Come discuss ways to double efforts to expand clean power with a coalition of leading sustainability organizations.

September 26

Short Films & Solidarity: Indigenous Women Life Protectors • 6:30pm – 9pm • In Person

Join a community screening of short films about Indigenous women safeguarding their lands and addressing the gender-based violence they face while protecting their territories. Through powerful storytelling, the films will explore the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women in the U.S., the defense of sacred waters in Guatemala, and the resilience of Indigenous women across Brazil’s biomes. Together, they reveal the deep connections between land, life, and the ongoing fight against environmental and gender-based violence.

September 27

Climate Education for Sustainable Cities: Solutions that Inspire • 1pm – 4:30pm • In Person

Explore innovative climate solutions and enjoy light refreshments at GrowNYC’s urban farm. Connect with expert panelists from around the world who will share strategies for tackling climate change on both global and local levels. Outdoors, witness NYC’s climate-resilient entrepreneurs in action, showcasing innovative solutions through hands-on demonstrations.

September 28

Climate Justice Lives Here • 2pm – 7pm • In Person

UPROSE’s Climate Justice Lives Here! is a Sunset Park community festival held at the end of NYC Climate Week to remind everyone that climate justice comes from frontline communities. This September also marks the 10th anniversary of the People’s Climate March, an effort led by the frontline. Join the Sunset Park community and allies on the waterfront at Brooklyn Army Terminal to participate in advocacy for climate justice through art builds and interactive learning circles. Enjoy food from local vendors and consider joining in on the clothing swap!
