EP Volunteer Day: The Battery Urban Farm

Join us for a joint volunteer event between Urban Green’s Emerging Professionals and the American Society of Landscape Architects. Members from both groups are invited to get their hands dirty at The Battery Urban Farm.

Volunteers will help with a seasonal project–more details to come. This is a great opportunity to mingle with members of both organizations and spend time outdoors! Attendance is free, but capacity is limited so sign up ASAP.

Food and drinks will be provided after the event courtesy of Maglin.
 
Attire: Please wear closed-toed shoes and weather appropriate clothing that can get dirty. Bring a water bottle if possible.

Directions: Volunteers should meet the horticulture staff at the picnic tables inside the playground at 5:30pm. 

Capacity Limit: Maximum 25 volunteers with waitlist.

Join Urban Green's Emerging Professionals for a screening of The Experimental City. This 2017 documentary follows the Minnesota Experimental City project which, proposed in the 1960s, envisioned a futuristic solution to urban problems, modeled by a full-size city to be created from scratch in the isolated woods of northern Minnesota. Following the screening, director Chad Freidrichs will join us for a Q&A.

“The experimental city was different because the idea was, we’re going to use science and technology and rationality to find the answer," Freidrichs recently told Smithsonian Magazine of the project.

Join us for a joint networking event between Urban Green’s Emerging Professionals and the Young Engineers in ASHRAE group to learn about current trends in green building. Looking for a career in urban sustainability? The entry point is not always an obvious one. Hear from professionals in the field who have forged their own paths to establish themselves in New York’s green building scene.

Panelists will describe their line of work as it relates to green building, identify challenges and opportunities for candidates looking to enter the field and share lessons learned. A moderated discussion and Q&A session will follow.

Mr. Volkmann is the coordinator of the 3rd Year Undergraduate Design “Comprehensive Design" Studio and leads the Technology curriculum for both Undergraduate and Graduate programs. His main pedagogic focus is on the integration of technical and environmental topics and skills into the design process.

Dr. Aydogan Akseli teaches construction technology and design, while also conducting research with her students on dynamic filtration systems. Her research goal is to improve indoor air quality and reduce the energy consumption profile of buildings.

Associate, Atelier Ten

As an experienced sustainable consultant and LEED expert, Mr. Mantyk has spent the last eight years at Atelier Ten guiding complex projects to LEED certification. He is one of the founding members of the Urban Green Council’s Programs Committee and worked as a mechanical engineer before joining Atelier Ten.

Associate in the Sustainability Practice, Thornton Tomasetti

Mr. Walker has over 10 years of experience working in sustainability, green building and urban planning. He was previously at Terrapin Bright Green, where he led bespoke and technical projects for various clients, including net zero energy guidelines, biophilic design plan reviews, energy master plans and climate positive developments.

Samuel Man
Policy Advisor, NYC Mayor's Office of Sustainability

Mr. Man focuses on programs and policies that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from New York City's nearly one million buildings. Prior to this role, Sam provided outreach support for New York State clean energy programs and was an energy auditor for a local utility energy efficiency program, where he provided technical assistance for small commercial businesses throughout New York City.
