On April 18, the New York City Council passed the most ambitious climate legislation enacted by any city in the world. The new law places buildings on a path to meet the city’s goal to reduce overall carbon emissions 80 percent by 2050. Buildings represent nearly 70 percent of those emissions.
Building design and performance is greatly influenced by energy codes. The structure, enforcement and jurisdiction surrounding these codes can have a huge impact on their effectiveness and on the greenhouse gas emissions from buildings.
