Two laws in NYC’s recent Climate Mobilization Act aim to transform the city’s rooftops in the decades ahead. Local Laws 92 and 94 require solar panels or green roofs where feasible on all new construction and major roof renovations. Over time, that transition will reduce NYC’s carbon emissions and help the city adapt to a world with more intense heatwaves, storms and floods.

Urban Green Council’s Sustainable Roof Laws Policy Brief, created in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, explains the basics of what you need to know.

OBJECTIVES: After this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the types of buildings Local Laws 92 and 94 affect.
  2. Explain the requirements for rooftops under Local Laws 92 and 94.
  3. Describe the differences in requirements for low-slope and high-slope roofs.
  4. Explain the importance of sustainable roofs and how they positively impact buildings in NYC.

To receive continuing education credits and a certificate of completion, you first need to register for the course. Upon registration, a link to the course quiz will be emailed to you. After reading the brief you must answer 70 percent of questions correctly to receive credit. The quiz can be taken multiple times.
