Demystifying Steam: Smaller Buildings provides the first-ever granular estimates of the locations and prevalence of steam heat in NYC’s 53,000 small and medium multifamily buildings (and expands upon our first report on steam heat). This brief is intended as a short synopsis of the larger report, produced by Urban Green, about steam use in multifamily properties between 5,000 and 50,000 square feet in NYC. It provides information about the distribution of steam use in NYC, and discusses the potential impact of upgrades and LL97 in relation to this.
OBJECTIVES
- To understand the magnitude of how many multifamily properties between 5,000 and 50,000 SF use steam.
- To understand in which types of multifamily properties steam is most prevalent.
- To understand the cost-saving potential of upgrading to more sustainable heating systems.
- To understand the scope of LL97’s impact on small and mid-size multifamily properties.
