WHAT DOES CLOSING INDIAN POINT MEAN FOR NYC EMISSIONS?

Having reduced our emissions nearly 15 percent since 2005, NYC has made significant progress toward 80x50. The savings are primarily the result of fuel-switching, building efficiency, and—in particular—cleaner electricity, including nuclear power.

The Indian Point nuclear facility currently provides about a quarter of New York City's electricity. But due to serious safety concerns, Governor Cuomo announced last January that the facility would be closed by 2021. Today on our blog, we discuss the impact the closure will have on NYC's carbon goals.
