Yesterday, Governor Hochul signed into law the Advanced Building Codes, Appliance and Equipment Efficiency Standards Act, which will save New Yorkers $15 billion in utility bills by 2035. Urban Green helped drive passage of the law through early analysis, stakeholder engagement and legislative advocacy. It's a big win for environmental justice and climate progress.
Touted by NYS Assemblywoman Pat Fahy as “the best climate and energy policy you’ve never heard of,” the law requires updates to the state’s Energy Code to achieve energy efficiency and—for the first time ever—greenhouse gas reductions in support of the state’s landmark Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA). The law also overhauls the state’s appliance efficiency standards program and adds new standards for 30+ products, including TVs and computers, yielding $6 billion in utility bill savings by 2035 for low- and moderate-income households.
This free online class, tailored for design and building professionals, covers the major updates to the 2020 NYCECC and how they relate to Local Law 97.

In the wake of the Supreme Court's decision to dramatically limit the power of the EPA to regulate carbon emissions, it's clear cities and states will have to lead the way in combating climate change.
However, our disappointment in this decision will not deter our work to advance policy, research and education to decarbonize buildings. Cities like New York can and must be leaders on climate.
