The Sunset Park Material Recovery Facility (also known as the Sims Recycling Facility) is an essential component of New York City’s sustainable waste management strategy. Opened in 2013 to ensure environmentally sound and cost-effective municipal recycling, this site serves as the principal processing facility for all of NYC’s curbside metal, glass, and plastic recyclables. Sunset Park is also home to one of the city’s largest solar power installations, a 100 kW wind turbine, and three artificial reefs.
Join us in learning about the project’s award-winning sustainable design and how the facility processes more than 19,000 tons of recyclable items collected by the Department of Sanitation each month.
This tour is open to Urban Green Council members only.
