RETROFITTING TO SCALE: 50,000 BUILDINGS IN 10 YEARS
In the near future, New York City will likely require that buildings larger than 25,000 square feet reduce their energy consumption. To comply with these regulations, building retrofits will have to occur on a scale never before experienced in NYC—or anywhere else.
Currently, the city’s largest energy retrofit firms can only complete a few dozen large projects each per year. The first phase of the NYC Retrofit Accelerator, the city’s designated program to facilitate building retrofits, was designed to average 500 energy efficiency projects annually. In comparison, the policies under consideration in NYC would estimate 5,000 building retrofits each year.
Retrofitting to Scale will examine how to massively scale up retrofits in NYC and other metro areas. What are the barriers to upgrading buildings now? What must change to make scaling retrofits feasible? What business opportunities will emerge? We will explore these questions over two thought-provoking sessions.
