Natural Talent Design Competition Awards Ceremony July 21st TRESPA Design Centre
For this year’s Natural Talent Design Competition, New York City’s Emerging Green Builders challenged architects and engineers to design an integrated middle school and affordable housing complex in the Harlem area of Manhattan. Interdisciplinary teams were required to submit designs with a relevant relationship between the school, housing complex and the surrounding neighborhood. Elements relating to all five categories of the LEED-NC v2.2 had to be incorporated by addressing sustainable design features. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges including William Stein, Principal at Dattner Architects, John Rice, Partner at AKF Engineers, and Lauren Yarmuth, Principal at YRG Sustainability Consultants, with the top winners moving on to compete for a national award at USGBC’s annual Greenbuild International Conference & Expo in November. Attendees at the Awards Ceremony will view some of the outstanding submissions, see winners selected, and hear a talk by Stein. Details here.

The Greening of Southie Screening in New York
This 2008 documentary by Ian Cheney tells the story of Boston's first residential green building, through the eyes of the steel-toed construction crew that sets out to build it. The film is an exploration of how environmentally-friendly design may be the key to solving the problem of climate change, and a humorous portrait of some of New England's most unlikely environmentalists.
