10-7-09: Mannahatta - New York's Green History

October 7, 2009

An Ecological History of New York

On October 27th, Urban Green Council and The New York Academy of Sciences presents Dr. Eric W. Sanderson, author of Mannahatta: A Natural History of New York City and Charles C. Mann, author of 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus, for a moderated discussion on the landscape of New York City prior to European settlement. The authors will open with a short presentation and lead into a broad ranging discussion of the human and environmental history of our region, including the import of this knowledge on the sustainable use of our region’s resources.

Drinks will be available following the discussion and both books will be available for sale. Urban Green and NYAS Members attend for free. If you're not an Urban Green member, JOIN today. Tickets and details here.

LEED Core Concepts and Strategies Workshop
October 23rd at Westchester Community College

This workshop provides essential knowledge of the LEED Rating Systems and sustainable building concepts for those seeking a better understanding of LEED or pursuing GBCI’s LEED Green Associate (Tier I) credential. By presenting LEED concepts at the credit category level across building types and rating systems and basics on the building certification process, this workshop provides the foundation required for any 300-level LEED education offering. Real project examples help demonstrate and reinforce learning. Prior Knowledge: Familiarity with USGBC and LEED, or USGBC's "Green Building Basics and LEED" instructor-led workshop or online program. Details here.

Oppositions: Is the Grass Really Greener?
November 2nd at Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House, Diker Pavilion

Green Roofs have been touted as the solution to various environmental ills. Some believe that less expensive and less complicated alternatives, like White Roofs (reflective roof coatings) and Blue Roofs (rooftop stormwater retention), are just as effective. How do the performance characteristics of these options compare? The inclusion of thought leaders from both sides promises a lively debate. Cocktails 6:00pm, Discussion 6:30pm, Q&A 7:30pm. Details here.
