Expo Day One: Aggarwala Urges Green Forward; Bloomberg Plans to Keep Sustainable New York on Track
Rohit Aggarwala opened the first annual Urban Green Expo Tuesday with an exhortation to the green building community. As reported by Gobest, Aggarwala "encouraged his audience to require 'some hard changes' in the way green buildings fit into the overall picture."
Later in the evening, at the Urban Green Gala, Mayor Bloomberg and others praised Urban Green Council for its contributions and reiterated the importance of moving New York's urban sustainability initiatives forward despite economic challenges. He pointed to the City’s trendsetting ban on smoking as an example of the impact New York City can have a model for other urban centers.
Hundreds of motivated green building professionals showed up to explore the halls of the Urban Green Expo Trade Show during its first day. Scores of exhibitors and dozens of expert educational panelists created a lively exchange throughout the day. Tickets for Wednesday’s educational sessions and Amory Lovins’ closing keynote address are still available at the door, at 125 West 18th Street. See today’s schedule here.
Urban Green Cost Study Keeps LEED Debate Fresh
Today, Urban Green Council releases the Cost of Green in NYC, a data-based study conducted in conjunction with Davis Langdon and with support from NYSERDA and Urban Green Council Members. This report examines recent construction projects in New York City in order to determine whether or not sustainability adds to project costs, and, if so, how much.
The study found no significant difference in the cost per square foot between green and non-green buildings, based on analysis of luxury high-rise residential and commercial interior projects.
