06-25-09: Meet the Experts at Urban Green Expo

June 26, 2009

Sept 22 -23 Expo Highlights Education, Innovation

The first slate of educational sessions for Urban Green Expo have been posted. More information on each session and many additional sessions are coming soon. After an incredible response to our call for proposals the educational conference is shaping up to be one of the premier green building events in the United States. The 30+ quality sessions will focus on those issues of greatest importance to our highly developed region; retrofitting of existing buildings, financial solutions in a troubled economy, and the green policies and codes that will impact our communities in the coming year. See a few of our sessions here and join us to build knowledge, foster debate and push green building issues to new levels in September.

We are also proud to introduce the first Green Garage Inventors Competition, which will highlight building products that address sustainability in compelling but practical ways. Submit your innovation today!

Parks, Theaters, and Skyscrapers, Oh My

Creative landscapes and historical theaters. Breathtaking views and state-of-the-art recycling facilities. Let architects, developers, and engineers guide you through the best of old New York as it looks toward the future.  Sign up for Urban Green summer tours in July. More details below.

Tour: Henry Miller's Theater
July 7th at 124 West 43rd Street

Join us for a tour of the Cook + Fox project to bring LEED Certification to New York City’s first theater. Built behind the restored façade of the original 1918 theater, Henry Miller’s Theater uses environmentally friendly practices and technologies including 95% air filtration, waterless urinals, and recycled, low-emitting, and locally sourced materials. In addition to its sustainable features, the reconstruction has increased the handicapped and overall seating capacity of the theater, enhanced the acoustics, added new cafes and a restaurant and (perhaps most importantly) increased the number of bathroom stalls for women. Details here.

High Performance Green Building Salon: Integrated Project Delivery
July 9th at Knoll Showroom

Integrated Design and Integrated Project Delivery are gaining momentum as organizational models that enable architects, consultants, clients and contractors to more effectively share information, better coordinate documents, reduce construction costs, optimize schedules, and build more sustainable projects. Panelists will address issues from the perspectives of an owner, architect, and contractor, all who have participated in a formal IPD process. Details here.

Tour: Teardrop Park
July 14th in Battery Park City

The desire to build and operate a sustainable public park influenced every aspect of Teardrop Park’s development, from material selection to contractor practices. Environmental aspects of the park’s design include fully organic soils and maintenance regimes that don’t rely on pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. Treated and recycled greywater from the adjacent LEED Gold-Certified Solaire Building and stormwater runoff from the site captured in an underground storage pipe supply all of the park’s irrigation needs. Details here.

Tour: Skanska's LEED CI fit-out at Empire State Building
July 16th at the Empire State Building

Leading the historic Art Deco skyscraper’s new initiative to reduce energy use by 38% a year by 2013, Skanska designed and built to high sustainability standards and achieved 35% less energy use than ASHRAE standards. The completely renovated floor maximizes daylighting throughout and offers exceptional views for all of its employees. The 24,400 sq ft office is projected to receive LEED-CI Platinum certification. Greening an Urban University: Oxymorons, Windmills and Carbon Footprints
Environmental Steward Nilda Mesa

Riddle: What university gives out 24 different environmental degrees while being located in a concrete metropolis? Would putting up windmills on Columbia's campus reduce its carbon footprint, or would it be a quixotic effort? Columbia University, with its three campuses and 44,000 faculty, staff and students, has pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 30% by 2017. The University's proposed Manhattanville campus is in the LEED-ND pilot program, and other ambitious sustainability initiatives have been launched in the last few years. Join us for a discussion of Columbia's approach to reducing its environmental footprint, and how students, faculty and staff are deeply engaged in this vital work-in-progress in the largest urban center in the U.S.
