Initiatives

USGBC New York's mission is to advance green building in the greater New York area through advocacy and education. We work with state and local governments, public and private sector entities, and the general public to promote the benefits of sustainable building practices.

We are currently spearheading a range of initiatives that include a complete green overhaul of New York City's building codes, compiling green training curricula to educate tradesmen on how to make sustainable principles a reality on the ground, and a research effort that demonstates why building green is smart for both economic and environmental reasons.

  • We kicked off a Green Codes Task Force in July 2008 to help green the laws and regulations that govern construction in the city, raising the bar for other municipalities to follow.
  • We started a Green Construction Skills Training program that will develop a scalable education program, which will be made available to educational and governmental bodies, as well as to our union and contractor partners.
  • We are sponsoring a Green Building Cost Study to debunk the myths around the payback of going green.

For students and young professionals, Emerging Green Builders (EGB) offers programs and events, including a Crash Course for LEED, and an annual Project Earth Day Fashion Show, which showcases eco-fashion designers.

Ongoing educational programs include the High Performance Building Salon, the Sustainable Cities Dialogue, green building tours, and a monthly Technical Roundtable. We also host LEED Workshops and Study Groups, and foster the green building community through our quarterly member meetings and other networking events.

Visit our events calendar for more information on upcoming programs.
