NYC Parks' unique rooftop laboratory contains over 30 different systems—comprising over 30,000 square feet—retrofitted onto an existing structure. This tour offers the unique opportunity to examine intensive, extensive, modular, monolithic, agricultural, vertical and hydroponic systems side-by-side and in various stages of growth.
Maintained by the Technical Services division since 2007, the complex showcases some of the latest innovations in green roof technology, as well as the city’s ongoing commitment to reduce its carbon footprint.
This tour is open to Urban Green Council members only.
Shuttle transportation to and from the facility will be provided at the 125th Street 4/5/6/Metro North Station.

NYC Parks Assistant Commissioner of Citywide Services
This tour will be led by Artie Rollins. A strategic leader and pivotal force in establishing direction, driving change, and creating the roadmap to connect financial, operational, capital and sustainable facility management goals of the city. As manager of the Five Borough Complex and as part of his agency-wide sustainability plan he has retrofit the facility with the world’s most diverse multi-system municipal green roof. This and his countless other environmentally focused initiatives build into his commitment to progress NYC Parks to meet NYC’s 80/50 goal (80% decrease in Green House Gas emissions by 2050) and ensure our agency is doing all it can to create a more resilient, responsible and sustainable global city.
