GPRO: Green Pro Building Skills
Since January 2008, Urban Green Council - USGBC New York, has been developing GPRO - a comprehensive training and certification program that will teach the people who build, renovate and maintain buildings the principles of sustainability combined with trade-specific green construction knowledge.
GPRO is the result of the collaboration of over 100 volunteers from local unions and contractors, design professionals, and USGBC - Upstate New York. Unions, construction companies, and universities will teach the courses, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a Urban Green Council Green Construction Skills certification by sitting an exam. Skilled workers will be poised to work in accordance with new regulations and to meet the expectations of owners and tenants who want healthier, environmentally sustainable, and energy efficient homes and offices.
The courses include a prerequisite, Fundamentals of Building Green -- a four hour introduction to the concepts of sustainability and efficiency -- and a set of trade-specific courses. Current trade-specific courses include: Building Operations & Maintenance, Construction Management, Plumbing, Electrical and Mechanical. More courses may be added. Applicants will receive a GPRO Certificate from Urban Green Council by passing an exam in their area of expertise. This certificate will demonstrate that an individual understands green building as it applies to their trade and will increase their ability to compete for and participate in green jobs.
Valuable partners in this project include the Building Trades Employers Association (BTEA), the Building Construction Trades Council (BCTC), the Consortium for Worker Education (CWE), and the City University of New York (CUNY).
